Mike DFG’s $ummer of Greed Is Building a Bigger Stage for Chicago
Chicago’s underground music scene is strongest when artists create opportunities for one another rather than waiting for the industry to come looking. Mike DFG brought that philosophy to life with the third annual $ummer of Greed, held July 24 at Reggies Rock Club.
Presented by Mike’s nonprofit and creative platform Bigger Than The City alongside Societas Music Group, $ummer of Greed was designed as more than another local concert. The showcase brought together over 17 performers representing different corners of Chicago’s emerging rap, hip-hop and alternative scenes.
The 2026 lineup was led by Mike DFG, Recoechi, SONNY, OkDeazy and Xella Red, with additional appearances from MGL, $ocial Introvert$, MadameStarlet, Femi Ishola, MVTE, PLQBOY$, Waine Ghazi, CRASHprez, Yon T, AJ Skells and GREYISHERE. Music throughout the night was handled by 312MAFIA and Dream. What separates $ummer of Greed from many underground showcases is its emphasis on community. Instead of building an event around one artist and treating everyone else as an opener, Mike has developed a platform that allows multiple rising acts, collectives and creative communities to share the same room.
For Mike, that mission is personal. The 22-year-old West Side artist has described his goal as expanding his impact beyond himself and eventually taking Chicago’s movement to other cities. Alongside his music career, he has remained involved with the John Walt Foundation, the Recording Academy’s Chicago community and Bigger Than The City, which focuses on creating opportunities for local creatives.
That commitment has helped $ummer of Greed grow into one of the city’s most ambitious artist-led underground showcases. It reflects a larger shift happening across Chicago, where young artists are no longer relying entirely on established promoters, labels or media companies to validate their work. They are organizing their own shows, developing their own audiences and creating ecosystems that allow the entire scene to grow together.
The event also marked an important moment in Mike DFG’s own evolution. His closing performance served as the official live debut of his HEI$MAN mixtape, bringing the project’s football-inspired world and rollout directly to the Reggies stage.
HEI$MAN has represented one of Mike’s most complete creative campaigns yet. Built alongside his “Starting Five” team, the project was developed over approximately nine months, with an emphasis on music, visuals, branding and world-building. Mike has explained that he sees himself as the quarterback of that team—organizing the vision while making sure each collaborator has what they need to execute it.
That approach carries directly into $ummer of Greed. Mike may be the artist at the center of the event, but its long-term value comes from how many other people are invited into the vision. Chicago has never lacked talent. The city’s greater challenge has often been creating enough accessible stages, resources and infrastructure for that talent to be discovered. With $ummer of Greed, Mike DFG is helping build that infrastructure himself.
The result is bigger than a lineup or a single night at Reggies. It is a statement about what can happen when an independent artist uses his growing platform to bring an entire community forward with him. As the city’s next generation continues to define the #NEWCHICAGO era, $ummer of Greed is becoming an important meeting point for the artists, collectives and supporters shaping what comes next.
